BACKGROUND
IAPS-International Association for People-Environment Studies is the forum for scholars who have an interest in an interdisciplinary exchange and in the study of the transactions and interrelationships between people and their socio-physical surroundings (including built and natural environments) and the relation of this field to other social and biological sciences and to the environmental professions. The scope of IAPS reflects the scientific and practical capabilities and aspirations in work concerning people in their environments. IAPS has several networks which are interest and research groups formed by IAPS members. They carry out debates, discussion groups, publications, often posses their own website and organize symposia and conferences.

IAPS-CS ‘Culture and Space network’ was established in 1997 with the aim of examining and engaging with issues related to culture and space interactions in the built environment. To achieve this we organise scientific meetings such as symposia, workshops; encourage research studies; produce publications; circulate information between researchers; and promote the study of socio-cultural issues in architectural, planning and design education. These activities can be grouped into 6 main categories.
1. International Symposium Series take place approximately every four years.
2. International Symposia Series takes place within the IAPS main conferences and other conferences.
3. IAPS International Joint Network Symposium Series.
4. National Culture and Space Symposium Series. This series is organized in Turkey with a number of international key-note speakers from the IAPS community every two years.
5. Culture and Space Architectural Design Workshops
6. The National culture and Space Student Meeting Series: Design workshops, article anthology/essay competition, design competition, exhibition, colloquium/symposium
AIM OF THE NETWORK
The aim of the Network is to identify issues and problems related to culture and space interactions in the built environment and facilitate elaborative research studies within an interdisciplinary framework. It is also intended:

Prof. Dr. Hülya Turgut, having a Bachelor’s Degree of Architecture, a Master of Architecture and a Doctorate of Architecture from Istanbul Technical University, worked as an academician at the department of Architecture in Istanbul Technical University between 1984 and 2010. In addition, she studied at the Joint Centre for Urban Design in the Department of Architecture in Oxford Brookes University, England (1987) as a research fellow, and worked in the Center for Environmental Design Research in California University, Berkeley as a Visiting Scholar (1996). Dr. Turgut, working as a professor since 1998 at ITU, worked a vice rector in charge of infrastructure, building investments and managements and as well as an advisory of rectorship. Between 2012- 2015, she worked and as a Director of Interior Architecture Department at Faculty of Architecture and Design at Maltepe University. Her main research interests focus on ‘Architectural Design Education’, ‘Housing Design and Research’, ‘Culture and Space Studies’. Much of her recent research focuses on globalization and its effects on new housing trends, urban transformation and revitalization projects. She has completed various architectural projects, competition prizes, researches and her essays have been published nationally and internationally. She is a joint co-coordinator of the IAPS-CS ‘Culture and Space’ Network; under the framework of this network, she has been chairing “International Culture and Space Symposium series“ and organizing “Culture and Space Design Workshops and Student Competitions”. Dr. Turgut is a co-editor of IAPS-CSBE Network Book Series.

I am a qualified architect with a Masters degree in Social Anthropology and a PhD which combines both disciplines. My research focuses on the interrelationship between people and their environments, particularly disadvantaged groups who inhabit or create environments in conditions of acute resource constraint or relative powerlessness.
